In India, economic growth has increased the demand for better health care and medical facilities and proper management of biomedical waste and its safe disposal. The concepts of medical tourism, is gaining importance, where hospitals of specialized nature will sooner or later come to light. The Government in order to resolve the issue of biomedical waste had notified Biomedical Waste (Management and handing) Rules, 1998 under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. These rules apply to all persons who generate, collect, receive, store, transport, treat, dispose, or handle biomedical waste in any form.

Dr Sujata Sanjay Pawar, B.Com, LL.M, NET, SET, PhD is presently working as an officiating Principal in Ismailsaheb Mulla Law College, Satara, in Maharashtra State. She has teaching experience of more than 24 years and she has designed courses covering cyber law and information technology. She is associated with various curriculum framing bodies and was a member of the Senate in Shivaji University.
